Practice

Having just finished bolting the mower together and having to run the new engine in, I didn't post a time, eeek here we go straight into the first championship race of the year

Race 1

Starting at the back with Dean and Glyn, i first had to learn the circuit. And it was a tricky old circuit, although on the face of it it looked nice n' simple because of the bogginess of the ground you had to figure out where to put the mower to avoid it being bogged down.

I'd just about figured this out an I was back on Glyn's arse when the damn clutch started slipping. Initially it wasn't to bad but I was loosing big time out of the 3 slow corners.

Im decided to go for it. She lasted until lap 7 or 8, and then she just stopped on the slow uphill corner at the bottom of the circuit. For some reason I thought if i revved a bit harder and tried to push the old girl might make it up the hill. She didn't and the clutch was chucking out plumes of smoke, game over !

Shame I've always come out guns blazing and have normally won the first championship race of each season. Oh well.

Turns out as Dean was lapping me, all he could smell was clutch and he was panicking that it was his mower.. That is until he saw the smoke coming out of mine.

Just about managed to get it over the line in last place.

Race 2

After Sunday's balls up with the clutch, Gordy lent me some new clutch plates and we managed to get the thing rebuilt and ready to go.

I lined up again at the back with Dean and Gyln, I got a good start and got between Dean and Glyn, but after a lap the sodding engine started coughing and spluttering at the bottom corner. I lost out to Glyn, and would then make up all the time, but yet again as I got to the bottom corner the engine would start to cough and splutter again and he would leave me standing.

I kept on trying my best and finally figured out that if I backed right of before I got to the corner that was giving me jip I could just about stay on Glyn's tail. Dean was long gone by now, so 2nd was the best I could hope for. I was loosing too much to make an overtaking move on Glyn but I kept letting him know I was there. On lap 12 he hit a bump and rolled the mower, I went past and came in 2nd, some 6 seconds behind Dean, 6 seconds to far, but all in all I enjoyed racing with Glyn, and he deserved 2nd and was unlucky. Better luck next time mate.

Getting ready ......

In my usual last minute panic I dragged the mower out of the garage on Saturday morning the week before the race and took it up to Dean's.

Luckily although i'd lent it to the mower destroyer himself (Jason Huskinson) for the 6 hour last year, it actually wan't in too bad a state.

The A frame needed some attention and then I had to fit the new engine. All in all not bad.

Dean helped knock together a new mount for the larger fuel tanks that we are allowed, and then it was just a case of bolting everything together. Simple or so I thought.

As usual work got in the way, so it had to wait until we got up to Billingshurst so I could finish it.
